Director of Employee Relations & Equal Employment OpportunityAbout the OpportunityThe Director of Employee Relations and Equal Employment Opportunity is a strategic senior leadership role, reporting directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor & Chief Human Resources Officer. This position is responsible for employee relations administration, equal employment opportunity, and affirmative action programs of the university. This role is responsible for managing all facets of employee relations for faculty and staff (EHRA and SHRA), developing and implementing campus-wide programs and training related to employee relations, mediation, compliance, grievances, disciplinary actions, performance management, conflict of interest, and other related services.
The Director will analyze and interpret policies, provide educational initiatives focused on the areas of oversight, support organizational cultural change, and enhance the recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce. Additionally, the director will provide guidance on the application of university, state, and federal laws and regulations within both employment and academic contexts.

About the RoleSupervising a team of four employee relations professionals, the Director serves as the executive subject matter expert on employee relations programs, policies, and procedures. This position develops and oversees organizational employee relations strategies, working closely with leadership to foster collaboration and implement best HR practices. The Director provides consultative guidance on employee disciplinary actions, including senior administration, faculty, and staff grievance administration, ensuring compliance with state and university policies. Additionally, the Director consults with leadership and legal counsel on employee relations matters, including investigations, coaching, advising, and reporting as necessary.
In consultation with the Chief Human Resources Officer, the Director reviews and approves all employee disciplinary actions, specialized leave actions, and separations of employment. The Director will provide consultative guidance and “best practice” strategies relative to compliance and application of federal and state regulatory requirements and University policies and will serve as key contact for external agencies on employee relations and affirmative action/equal employment opportunity issues.
The Director will manage the thorough and impartial investigation of complaints of discrimination and harassment filed by students, staff, faculty, or visitors in compliance with federal and state laws, executive orders, and University policies and procedures, and will collaborate with the Division of Legal Affairs, Risk and Compliance on investigations involving the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Office of Civil Rights, and North Carolina Office of State Human Resources.
As the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Officer, the Director ensures compliance, provides training, and manages complaints related to ADA regulations. They also collaborate with the Title IX Office on employee and third-party investigations, work with Class and Compensation to address pay equity, and analyze exit survey data to develop strategic employee retention plans.
The Director will also be responsible for university-wide training on EEODF, hiring practices, anti-discrimination, workplace violence, and supervisory/management training.
Education, Experience, and QualificationsThe successful candidate will have a master's degree in a related field from an accredited institution and a minimum of seven years of relevant experience, or a bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution and a minimum of nine years of relevant experience. Relevant experience includes human resources management, employee relations, EEO/AA, civil rights investigations, mediations, and/or other related responsibilities involving complex employee issues.
The successful candidate will also have demonstrated experience in the following areas:
- conducting investigations, comprehensive report writing, and managing employee grievances and complaints;
- Affirmative Action and EEO laws, regulations, and policies; and
- supervisory and management experience, including overseeing professional-level employees in a variety of human resources functions.
Other preferred qualifications include:
- strong analytical skills;
- computer and technology proficiency, especially with EEO/AA software solutions;
- excellent communication, consultation, training, and presentation skills;
- experience in higher education or a governmental entity;
- experience working in a university or academic setting with knowledge of faculty and staff employment structures;
- formal training in workplace investigations, mediation, or conflict resolution, including high-profile or sensitive cases;
- experience drafting, revising, and implementing HR policies and procedures that align with best practices and legal standards;
- track record of working collaboratively with legal counsel, risk management, faculty leadership, and administrative departments;
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree or other relevant legal education or employment law expertise and certification;
- Certification as an employment mediator, EEODF instructor, or related EEO/AA certification (e.g., AAAED Certified Affirmative Action Professional); and
- SHRM-CP/SCP or PHR/SPHR certification.
